Current Issues

General Requirements

ALL LIVESTOCK FROM ANY FOREIGN COUNTRY must meet special requirements, and have permits issued only by an Animal Industry Board veterinarian which can be obtained by calling 605.773.3321 Monday-Friday (8a.m. to 5p.m. CDT). All non domestic animals require permits issued only by an Animal Industry Board veterinarian. Import permits are valid for 15 days.

All livestock entering South Dakota must have an official Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) stating:

  1. Name, address, and phone number of consignor; name and address of point of origination if different from consignor; name, physical address, and phone number of consignee; name and physical address of destination if different than consignee information.
  2. Species of animal, age, sex, breed, number, purpose of movement, test results, etc.
  3. Signature, address, and phone number of inspecting licensed accredited veterinarian.
  4. Individual official identification listed as required.
  5. Import shipping permit number for livestock. (As listed by species below.) NO import permit required on CVIs issued for domestic livestock using approved electronic systems (GlobalVetLink, VSPS, VetSentry, and Sale Time Systems).
  6. Must be free of signs of infectious or contagious diseases.

Import permits are valid for 15 days.
