The Animal Industry Board continues to maintain a Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) Herd Certification Program approved by USDA APHIS. Currently, South Dakota has 22 farmed cervid herds participating in the USDA recognized voluntary CWD Herd Certification (HCP) program. This surveillance program resulted in CWD testing of 110 eligible animals in FY 2024

Tuberculosis and Brucellosis
Bovine tuberculosis (TB) and brucellosis are infectious diseases that can affect cervids and other mammals including humans. The SD Animal Industry Board administers a voluntary TB accreditation program and brucellosis certification program for captive cervids. To participate in either program, a herd must have two negative tests 9-15 months apart. Then to maintain disease status, herds are tested every 36 months
