Canadian Cattle and Bison

  1. Must meet USDA Import Requirements.
  2. Certificate of Veterinary Inspection and telephone permit number. Import permits are valid for 15 days.
  3. Individual official ID listed on the CVI.
  4. Bison:Legible "CAN" brand is no longer required.
    1. If bison are not branded, two corresponding ear tags are required. One tag will be an official radio frequency identification (RFID) tag; the other tag will be an unofficial redundant dangle tag with the corresponding RFID number printed on it. Tags should be placed in opposite ears.
    2. Bison can continue to use the same identification requirements as cattle.
  5. Cattle:Permanent, legible “CAN” mark applied with a freeze brand or hot iron, and is easily visible on the live animal, is still required. Alternatively, a tattoo bearing the letters “CAN” applied to the inside of the left ear is also acceptable. The cattle must also have individual identification with an official Canadian ear-tag, applied prior to each animal’s entry into the United States.
  6. Statement on Certificate of Veterinary Inspection: "These animals were conceived, born and raised in Canada or the US."
